No. 809 Squadron with ‘Venomina’ at Yeovilton. (Brian Phillips)

“One night we ‘liberated’ a nude statue from the local Yeovilton sculptor; we accidentally broke her arm off, so we had to pay for it. It became our property and we called it ‘Venomina’! I’m not sure what happened to it. It was outside the officers’ mess at Yeovilton, maybe it should go to Marham ready for 809 Squadron to reform.

“On 13 November 1955 we took the aircraft to Malta. Hal Far was having a new runway laid, so luckily we were pushed over to RAF Ta Kali. We flew from there most of the time, being the first squadron to move back into Hal Far until we left the island in March ’56. It snowed while we were there, the first snow they’d had in Malta for about 60 years.”
